Canadian Citizenship by Descent: How I Can Help You Navigate Bill C‑3

In December 2025, Canada implemented Bill C‑3, a major change to citizenship law that now allows descendants of a Canadian‑born ancestor to apply for Canadian Citizenship by Descent. Under the previous law, citizenship could only pass to the first generation born outside Canada. Bill C‑3 removes that restriction.
If you can prove your direct line back to a Canadian‑born ancestor, you may now be eligible to apply for citizenship through Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).
You can review the full application process on the official IRCC website.
If you’re looking for quick answers, my full Bill C‑3 FAQ covers eligibility, documents, and timelines.
As a professional genealogist specializing in French‑Canadian research, I help clients document their lineage clearly, accurately, and thoroughly. Whether your roots lie in Québec, Acadia, Ontario, the Maritimes, or English‑speaking regions of Canada, I can help you identify the ancestor who connects you to Canada and gather the records needed to support your application.
